What is HealthTronics' history and mission?
HealthTronics, Inc. is a urology focused company which excels at providing an exclusive suite of healthcare services and technology including urologist partnership opportunities, surgical and capital imaging equipment, maintenance services offerings, and anatomical pathology services.
For over 20 years HealthTronics has been the leading provider of urological services and products in the United States. Headquartered in Austin, Texas with a service and manufacturing facility and anatomical pathology laboratory in Georgia, we provide the most advanced technology and premiere support systems to hospitals, surgery centers and clinics across the United States.
Finally, HealthTronics is a company which continues to strengthen its core lithotripsy business by partnering with physicians to improve both patient care and the physician's practice economics. HealthTronics intends to use that core lithotripsy business as a platform to introduce new growth drivers through technology, service, and strategies, further leveraging that platform.
-
What is HealthTronics' overall strategy?
In terms of our overall strategy -- our core strength is helping urologists converge around new technologies and services that improve patient care and practice economics.
We are particularly adept when there are three criteria present:
- A need for large capital investment;
- High levels of patient throughput; and,
- Ongoing complexity within the regulatory environment.
A combination of these criteria supports the urologist having a partner like HealthTronics and it is these type scenarios where we seek to identify and establish a partnership.
We believe that our partners are increasingly viewing us as a valuable partner in a context far broader in scope than just lithotripsy or BPH treatments. They understand that HealthTronics takes seriously its mission to bring its partners new technologies and services that improve patient care as well as their practice economics. At HealthTronics, we understand that our future rests on our ability to fulfill our mission.

Please explain the Medical Products and Urology Services business segments within HealthTronics
We provide healthcare services and medical devices, primarily for the urology community. We have two reportable segments: medical products and urology services.
Medical Products
We sell and maintain lithotripters, laser products and their related consumables. We are the exclusive U.S. distributor of the RevoLix laser, in the urology market, for LISA laser, a German manufacturer. The operations of our pathology laboratory, ClariPath Laboratories, are also included in the medical products segment.
Urology Services
Our lithotripsy services are provided principally through limited partnerships or other entities that we manage. In 2006, affiliated physicians used HealthTronics lithotripters to perform approximately 51,000 procedures in the U.S. We do not render any medical services. Rather, our physician partners render these services.
As the general partner of the limited partnerships or the manager of the other types of entities, we also provide services relating to operating our lithotripters, including scheduling, staffing, training, quality assurance, service and maintenance, regulatory compliance, and contracting with payors, hospitals and surgery centers.
Also in the urology services segment, our partners provide treatments for benign and cancerous conditions of the prostate. In treating benign prostate disease, we deploy photo-selective vaporization of the prostate (PVP). The PVP technology applies an energy source, which reduces the size of the prostate gland. For treating prostate and other cancers prior to November 30, 2006, our partners used a procedure called cryosurgery, a process which uses a double freeze thaw cycle to destroy cancer cells.

How does HealthTronics recognize revenue?
We recognize revenue primarily from the following sources:
- Fees for urology services. A substantial majority of our urology revenue is derived from fees related to lithotripsy treatments performed using our lithotripters. We, through our partnerships or other entities, facilitate the use of our equipment and provide other support services in connection with these treatments at hospitals and other health care facilities. The professional fee payable to the physician performing the procedure is generally billed and collected by the physician. Benign prostate disease and prostate cancer treatment services are billed in the same manner as our lithotripsy services under either retail or wholesale contracts. These services are also primarily performed through limited partnerships, which we manage.
- Fees for operating our lithotripters and laser devices. Through our partnerships and otherwise directly by us, we provide services related to operating our lithotripters and lasers and receive a management fee for performing these services.
- Fees for maintenance services. We provide equipment maintenance services to our partnerships as well as outside parties. These services are billed either on a time and material basis or at a fixed monthly contractual rate. Our service engineers are able to service not only our lithotripters, imaging systems and lasers, but our competitor's systems as well.
- Fees for equipment sales, consumable sales and licensing applications. We sell and maintain lithotripters, we distribute the RevoLix laser and we also sell consumables related to the lithotripters and lasers. With respect to some lithotripter sales, in addition to the original sales price, we receive a licensing fee from the buyer of the lithotripter for each patient treated with such lithotripter. In exchange for this licensing fee, we provide the buyer of the lithotripter with certain consumables. All the sales for equipment and consumables are recognized when the related items are delivered. Revenues from licensing fees are recorded when the patient is treated. In some cases, we lease certain equipment to our partnerships as well as third parties. Revenues from these leases are recognized on a monthly basis or as procedures are performed.
- Fees for ClariPath Laboratories anatomical pathology services. We provide anatomical pathology services with a focus on the urology market. Revenues from these services are recorded when the related laboratory procedures are performed.
